Ross Strand is a sandy beach on the shore of Killala Bay, encompassing extensive habitats such as mudflats, saltmarshes, and sand dunes that sustain a diverse range of vegetation and wildlife species. It is part of the 004036 Killala Bay/Moy Estuary (SPA) & 000458 Killala Bay/Moy Estuary (SAC). Killala Bay is a Class A and B Shellfish Production Area. Ross Strand affords opportunities for surfing, canoeing, and angling. The bathing area is about 0.30km wide, and the water covers an area of about 0.60km2. The water levels vary between 0.5m and 4.0m depending on the tides.

Killala is a picturesque seaside village 11km north-west of Ballina in north Mayo, famous in Irish history for the part it played in the 1798 rebellion. This sandy beach in a rural environment is located 4 km north of Killala town along the west side of Killala Bay. An esker ridge close by is covered by hazel woodland. The ground flora here has an unusual degree of diversity. The bathing area is approximately 0.30km wide. The bathing water is approximately 0.60km2 in area.
Ross strand is a sandy beach located along the shoreline of Killala Bay. Killala Bay has an extensive triangular estuary with mudflats lining the sides of the channel. The bay offers rich feeding for wildfowl and waders.

It is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA 004036) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC 000458), as part of the Killala Bay/Moy Estuary. There is a shellfish area in Killala Bay, west of Bartra Island. The beach is around 4.5km long, but the patrolled bathing area is approximately 500m.
