Laycastle Beach is a soft, sandy area with a small stretch of marsh and dunes, forming part of Ballyvergan Marsh (Site Code 000078) to the west. Popular activities here include surfing, windsurfing, canoeing, and angling.
The beach is used by limited numbers of surfers, windsurfers, canoeists, & anglers. Some sailing activities are carried out in the estuary. There are a number of large mobile home parks near the beach which are used by holidaymakers during the summer season. The beach & nearby promenade area at Youghal Front Strand are used extensively by walkers.
Claycastle Beach is a sandy beach located in Youghal Bay, in East County Cork, within walking distance of Youghal Town, where the River Blackwater - the largest river in the south of Ireland - meets the sea. Claycastle Beach forms part of an approximately 5km stretch of south east facing sandy beach which stretches from Youghal Town south west to Pillmore, & which contains 2 other identified beaches, Youghal Front Strand & Redbarn. Claycastle Beach is located in the Youghal Bay Coastal Water Body (Waterbody Code SW_020_0000), the waterbody status under the SWRBD Plan 2010 is Good & the objective is to Protect. ExtentThe bathing area at Claycastle Beach is approximately 500m long, & is approximately 0.05km2 in area.
Claycastle Beach is a sandy beach with a narrow area of marsh/dunes (part of Ballyvergan Marsh) between the beach & the road on the eastern end. The road & marsh are protected from the sea with rock armour. There is also a mobile home park adjoining the beach at the eastern endA public car park runs at the rear of the beach for almost 300m towards the western end of the beach.
